Crichton's next novel, The Terminal Man, was filmed as well by director Michael Hodges ( Get Carter), and Crichton himself quickly jumped into the director's chair with 1973's Westworld. YES NOCrichton's next fictional foray would prove to be his defining one – as well as the first to appear under his real name – 1969's science fiction thriller The Andromeda Strain, which was quickly snapped up by Hollywood and turned into a hit film two years later by director Robert Wise.

Clearly, this fledgling physician was finding more success in the world of fiction than in medicine. They were moderate successes and the Hudson novel (1968's A Case of Need, eventually reprinted under Crichton's real name) actually won the mystery genre's prestigious Edgar Award. But he was a writer at heart and, unbeknownst to his peers or instructors, was secretly penning thriller novels that were published under the pseudonyms John Lange and Jeffrey Hudson. Born on Octoin Chicago, Illinois, Crichton (pronounced "kry-ton") was encouraged by his parents to be a writer, although he eventually gravitated toward medicine and attended Harvard Medical School. Oh, and did I mention that he was a Harvard-trained physician by the age of thirty? And that he's a renowned expert on painter/sculptor Jasper Johns, even having published a respected monograph on the artist? And that he's 6 feet, 10 inches tall? No, I'm not making any of this up. Just the kind of character and concept that Michael Crichton, who himself has excelled in all of the above endeavors, might create. Replace those "ors" with "ands," and this vision of a contemporary renaissance man with his finger firmly on the pulse of popular culture starts to seem even more like fantasy or hi-tech science-fiction, maybe the result of super-secret DNA bio-engineering to create a modern superman. NUMBER OF FILMS DIRECTED: 6 (feature films).īIOGRAPHY: Most people only dream of being a best-selling novelist or a successful film director or the creator of one of the most popular television dramas in recent years.
